Latest company news about Which Tool or Design Works Best for Which Material?

In CNC turning, the choice of tools and designs hinges on the specific material being machined, as each material's properties dictate tool selection and cutting strategies. Here are some common materials used in CNC turning and the recommended tools and designs for each:

1. Aluminum: When machining aluminum, opt for carbide or HSS inserts with sharp cutting edges. Employ lighter cuts, higher cutting speeds, and utilize coolant or lubrication to prevent chip adhesion.

2. Low/Medium Carbon Steel: For low to medium carbon steel, choose carbide inserts with a tougher grade and a positive rake angle. Use robust toolholders, sufficient coolant and lubrication, and operate at a slower cutting speed compared to aluminum.

3. Stainless Steel: Machining stainless steel requires carbide inserts with high-temperature resistance and low-friction coatings. Utilize lower cutting speeds, controlled feed rates, and effective coolant and lubrication to manage heat buildup.

4. Brass and Copper: When machining brass and copper, employ carbide or HSS tools with sharp edges and polished surfaces. Ensure adequate coolant and lubrication to prevent work hardening, use lighter cuts, and maintain controlled chip formation.

5. Plastics: Machining plastics like acrylic or Nylon necessitates solid carbide or HSS tools with sharp edges. Implement lower cutting speeds, reduced feed rates, and use coolant or lubrication to prevent melting or chip adhesion.

6. Exotic Alloys: For machining exotic alloys such as titanium, opt for specialized carbide or ceramic inserts designed for high-temperature resistance. Employ a robust coolant or lubrication system, operate at slower cutting speeds, and utilize a strong, rigid tooling setup.
